Science Tricks

Observing, predicting, testing and exploring. Counter-intuitive experiments stimulate skills of scientific enquiry

A brief summary

Observing, predicting and testing. A baffling and brilliant array of experiments use everyday physics and kitchen chemistry to explain some key concepts. Science Tricks was originally developed by Dr Mike Coles - a legend in hands-on chemistry education - and our chemistry shows are supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

These shows don’t use the Dome and involve exciting chemistry. More details of timing, capacity and curriculum links are below.

Scientific Enquiry

We want to stimulate curiosity in science for all, regardless of age, gender, background or ability. Our science shows:

  • Allow for questions to share interests and explore ideas
  • Treat every child as unique, supporting personal development
  • Promote observation, prediction and exploration
  • Encourage imagination, creative and critical thinking
  • Support and enhance the Curriculum across subject areas

Science Tricks

KS1

Key Stage One - ages 5-7

This show is bursting with surprises! Counter-intuitive demonstrations and fun experiments will bring out the scientist in every child.

  • Duration: ~45 mins
  • Curriculum Links
  • Capacity: ~60 children + adults

KS2

Key Stage Two - ages 7-11

Observing, predicting and testing. In this show children are encouraged to question the baffling array of strange and wonderful experiments as we use everyday physics and kitchen chemistry to explain some key concepts. This show has plenty of experiments and demos that you can try in the classroom or kitchen, as well as some that you definitely cannot!

  • Duration: ~45 mins
  • Curriculum Links
  • Capacity: ~60 children + adults

KS3

Key Stage Three - ages 11-14

Find out what your students really think about the world around them with a fabulous collection of counter-intuitive experiments that pose the questions “What if...?” "Why?" and “What happens next?”, with plenty of ideas to try out in the classroom.

  • Duration: ~50 mins
  • Curriculum Links
  • Capacity: ~60 students + adults

KS4+

Key Stage Four - ages 14-16+

At KS4 we delve ever deeper into the science behind the tricks. Using everyday objects, the seemingly impossible becomes possible as we explore gravity and falling objects, turn water to wine and investigate chemical colour and the conservation of angular momentum.

  • Duration: ~50 mins
  • Curriculum Links
  • Capacity: ~60 students + adults
