Exploring Careers in STEM event
On Wednesday 6th March 2024, Laura and I were invited to attend the Exploring Careers in STEM event at SGS College Filton Campus, run by Lara Lalami from Creative Tuition Collective. This event was part of a larger programme encouraging young people from under-represented groups to consider a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).
Creative Tuition Collective are a wonderful organisation that provide various types of support to students from low-income backgrounds as well as marginalised and under-represented communities. This support includes extra tuition, workshops, and personal development advice.
We were incredibly excited to be involved in this event as we know first-hand how few people from these backgrounds end up in a STEM career, having completed research on this very subject a couple of years ago. We spoke to dozens of 16-19 year olds about what Explorer Dome does, and how we got into a career in a STEM related industry. All the students were really engaged and asked some great questions. We thoroughly enjoyed the chance to share our passion for science communication and look forward to our next opportunity to do this.
