BAP 2024

The many faces of Josh

The British Association of Planetaria (BAP) Conference 2024 at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh

By Laura Down

This conference was an excellent way to find out more about the wider planetarium community and science centres, as well as other mobile ‘domers’. Over the two days, we were treated to a well-rounded mix of sponsor and member sessions, providing valuable insights into the current trends and challenges facing the sector. We saw an array of immersive fulldome and giant screen content, the latest technology and gadgets, and got to visit the exhibition spaces at Dynamic Earth – a journey through our Earth’s past, present and future. There was a real iceberg to get your hands on – cool!

One highlight for me, was the fulldome film “What Santa See’s”, by Ben and Tommy from Life Science Centre. This was a magical immersive creation with just the right ingredients of education, poetry, animation, astronomy and Christmas. What’s not to like!

In addition to celebrating achievements, the conference also addressed some of the trials and tribulations within the planetarium sector. Some science centres are facing closure, others are being built. The discussions and member sessions provided a realistic perspective on the hurdles we face, such as funding, audience engagement, and the need for innovative programming to attract diverse audiences. It was heartening to see participants actively sharing strategies and solutions to these common challenges. The exchange of ideas was super helpful in terms of best practice for science communicators. Some interesting conversations around inclusivity too and what museums and presenters can be doing to make exhibits and shows more inclusive in terms of accessibility and reaching wider communities.

Dynamic Earth from Holyrood Park

Before departing a few of us took a short hike up Holyrood Park, an extinct volcano as it happens - Arthur’s Seat being the city’s highest of 3 volcanic hills, but it was too late to attempt that! We were able to look over Edinburgh with it’s twinkly lights and see Dynamic Earth lit up like a purple bug. I left feeling energized and excited about the possibilities ahead for Explorer Dome and the Planetarium community. Thank you BAP!
